More evidence that Smart is Cool: The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) announced today three finalists for the inaugural Regional Youth Playwriting Workshop and Competition for Colorado high school students.
Finalists Victoria Capraro (Denver School of the Arts), Jack Fletcher (East High School) and Laurain Park (Alexander Dawson High School) will receive a $250 cash scholarship, a staged reading at the 2014 Colorado New Play Summit and a complimentary pass to any reading or production at the Summit. In addition, their teachers will receive a $250 gift certificate for books, supplies or other teaching tools for their classrooms. The winner of this year’s competition will have his/her play produced at the Denver Center Theatre Academy during the 2014 summer program.
Last September, the DCPA Education Department launched the new state-wide program. Seventy-five one-act plays were submitted by students from various high schools. The program was designed to advance literacy, creativity, writing and communication through playwriting while nurturing Colorado’s promising young playwrights and developing theatre artists and audiences.
Local playwrights and Education staff taught 83 workshops in Colorado high schools introducing the art of writing a one-act play. More than 1,750 high school students participated in the workshops, which were taught in every school district in the Denver-metro area and in eleven counties including Park County, El Paso and Gunnison County.
“When we launched the program, we had no idea if playwriting would be an artistic medium that was valued or respected by Colorado’s current high school generation,” said Director of Education, Tam Dalrymple Frye. “We are thrilled to report that the act of playwriting is alive and thriving in our Colorado high schools. The depth and breadth of these one acts are staggering. We can’t wait for next year.”
Congratulations to Victoria, Jack, and Laurain . . . and all the other Colorado high school students who took part. Keep up the good work!
